GM Buying Wind Power

(Toledo, OH) General Motors two auto parts plants in Northwest Ohio soon will be powered by wind turbines.

G-M plans to buy 200 megawatts of wind energy from wind farms in Ohio and Illinois, with the result that, once this energy is flowing, 20-percent of the company's global electricity usage will be from renewable sources.

The automaker says that's enough wind energy to meet the needs of three plants in Indiana and four in Ohio, including the Toledo GM Powertrain plant where transmissions are made and its Defiance Casting operation where engine blocks are manufactured.

The other Ohio plants are the Lordstown assembly facility and Parma Metal Center.

Starwood Energy Group will provide half of the energy through its Northwest Ohio Wind farm in Van Wert and Paulding counties. GM announced last year that it intends to source all electricity needs at its facilities worldwide with renewable energy by 2050.
