Lake Twp. Trustees Fighting Farmfield Sludge

(Lake Twp., OH) Lake Township Trustees are trying to stop sludge from being spread on farm fields.

Township trustees are asking the Ohio EPA to block the application of biosolids from Toledo's Bayview wastewater treatment plant on 73 acres of farmland.

A resolution cites concern over sludge run-off from those fields into creeks and rivers that drain into Lake Erie and the potential of making the lake’s toxic algae problem even worse. Lake Township's administrator calls it a state-regulated issue that's become a local government problem.

The Ohio EPA has authorized the application of the biosolids, which are often re-used as fertilizer in farm fields.
