Murder Suspect Shot, Killed In Safety Building

TOLEDO, Ohio - A man suspected in the murder of his grandmother was shot and killed Thursday inside Toledo Police headquarters.

Damon Barstad, 23, was arrested by Toledo police Thursday morning on murder charges. He was taken to the Safety Building and placed inside a holding cell to await extradition to Warren, Michigan.

Barstad was not handcuffed in his holding cell. At one point, he asked to leave his cell to go to the bathroom. Barstad then rushed the officer when the cell door was opened. Two other officers pushed Barstad back into the holding cell. He then grabbed one of the officer's Tazer and was shot in the chest by another officer.

Toledo Police Chief George Kral says video of the incident will be released in the coming weeks and that an investigation into the incident is underway.

Chief Kral says the officer that shot Barstad is an eight-year veteran of the department and will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation. He said the names of the officers involved will be released Monday.

Barstad was a suspect in the murder of his 68-year-old grandmother in Warren, MI. Police there accused him of stabbing his grandmother to death and stuffing her body into a recycling bin at her home.
