Ohio House Approves Bill To Raise Gas Tax

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohioans could soon be paying more at the pump.

The Ohio House approved a two-year transportation budget Thursday that would raise the gas tax in the state by 10.7 cents a gallon. The tax on diesel fuel would go up 20 cents a gallon under the proposal. The increases would be phased in over two years.

The hike comes after Governor Mike DeWine proposed using an increase in the gas tax to raise more than $1 billion to fix Ohio's bridges and highways. The increase in the budget bill is less than the Governor originally proposed. DeWine originally asked for an increase of 18 cents a gallon.

The bill now goes to the Ohio Senate for approval.
